Minnesota Sets Records at the 2008 USA Wrestling Asics Folkstyle National Championships

Minnesota sent a record 324 athletes to the 2008 USA Wrestling Asics Folkstyle National Championships. This group of Minnesotan's put in a dominating performance crowning 18 National Champions and a total of 107 All-Americans!

The overall Team Championship was brought home by Pinnacle finishing just four points ahead of fellow Minnesota club Minnesota Storm 54 to 50 for a Minnesota 1-2 team finish. National Team Championship performances were won by the Hi Flyers in the Bantam Division, led by National Champion Brandon Psyk and All-American Dylan Droegemuller and Minnesota Storm brought home the Junior National Team Championship led by National Champions Jacoby Bergeron and Justin Lavalle as well as All-Americans Cody Lensing, Pat LeVasseur and Travis Peralta. Team Pinnacle brought home National Team Runner-Up trophies in both the Midget Division, led by All-Americans Rylee Molitor, Christian Bahl and Jimmy Lennon, and the Schoolboy Division, led by National Champion Sam Brancale and All-Americans Dakota Trom, Jared Oftedahl, Tristan Manderfeld and Zach Gehloff.

Rutt dominates at MN/USA Junior State Championships

6 others claim double titles

Travis Rutt turned in a dominating performance over the weekend as 1 of 7 wrestlers to capture double titles at the 2008 MN/USA Wrestling Junior State Greco-Roman and Freestyle Championships. Not only did Rutt win both styles, going 10-0 in the process, but he outscored his opponents 95-1 and did not lose a single period. 

Other double winners included Hayden Zillmer at 98lbs, Kyle Ballard at 105lbs, Patrick Levasseur at 119lbs, Eric Yngsdal at 145lbs, Kevin Steinhaus at 160lbs and Jake Kahnke 215lbs. By claiming double state championships these wrestlers have also secured spots for themselves on both the Greco-Roman and Freestyle rosters for the 2008 ASICS/USA Wrestling Junior National Championships held at the Fargo Dome (Fargo, ND)  in late July.  All state champions have also secured spots for themselves on the Minnesota Storm teams that will compete in the USA Wrestling Junior National Duals in their respective styles. 
 
Levasseur, Yngsdal, Steinhaus, Rutt and Kahnke are all Triple Crown Winners as well having won both legs of this weekends tournaments in addition to having won state high school titles back in March. 
 
While James Locke and Trey Bertram were not double state champions they were double finalists and each won a state title...at the same weight.  Locke won the Greco-Roman title with Bertram avenging that loss in the Freestyle finals.  Double finalists in addition to those previously mentioned included Jacoby Bergeron, Ryan Schroepfer, Nate Lecy (Freestyle champion), Matthew Kelliher, Justing Lavalle (Freestyle champion), Robert Fisher (Greco-Roman champion) and Ryan Madson (Greco-Roman champion)
