MN/USA Wrestling 2024 State Duals Kick Off with Thrilling Matches

Rochester, MN. – 3/14/2024:  The 2024 MN/USA Wrestling State Duals commenced with an electrifying start as 16 elementary teams and 15 girls’ teams took to the mats on Thursday morning at Mayo Civic Center. The opening round witnessed two epic duals that set the stage for an action-packed tournament.

In one of the standout matchups, the defending champions, Northfield took on Flat Earth, resulting in a nail-biting 41-41 tie. However, Flat Earth clinched victory by criteria, showcasing their intensity and determination. Meanwhile, Wayzata secured a hard-fought victory over Farmington with a final score of 43-39, proving the Trojans mean business.

In round one the fans saw intense matches, exceptional talent, and a competitive spirit from all the participating teams. Farmington and Wayzata showcased their skills across the 16 weight classes.  Farmington got up early winning the first 5 of 6 weights. Wayzata charged back winning the next 6 out 7, with each competitor showcasing a solid performance. Notably, Wayzata's Gavin Johnson at 115lbs secured a 13-10 decision over Owen McLay, contributing crucial points in the dual and helping Wayzata remain unbeaten.

Similarly, the matchup between Flat Earth and Northfield was a display of grit and determination from both sides. Flat Earth picked up a forfeit at 48lbs and followed it up with a 10-4 decision by Leighton Drahota over Lasson Maley at 52lbs.  Northfield picked up two big wins with Dawson Carter defeating Liam Freeman 5-3 at 76lbs, and Liam Maley (84lb) defeating Gabe Honnette in sudden victory overtime.  But bonus points were the key to Flat Earths victory with pins from Kyzer Eller (68lb), Dawson Carter (72lb), Maddox Boogerd (80lb), and Reid Carter (100lb).

As the competition progresses, anticipation mounts for more thrilling matchups and memorable moments at the 2024 MN/USA Wrestling State Duals. With each team showcasing their talent and tenacity, the stage is set for an unforgettable tournament that celebrates the essence of folkstyle wrestling in Minnesota.
