Back to 1992 - Junior Nationals

1992 Junior Nationals was held in St. Paul, MN and team Minnesota crowned one champion in Freestyle and one in Greco-Roman along with 13 combined all-Americans. The total attendance was 1,842 with 1,050 in freestyle and 792 in Greco.  For the folks who have been around this great sport of wrestling a while you will see some names that are sure to take you take you back in time, a blast from the past.

Jason Reitmeier (132) was the lone freestyle champion for Minnesota as he defeated Oregon’s Matt Paulson in the finals.  Jason DeVries (220) was a finalist as well but was defeated by 1996 Olympian, Jason Gleasman from New York. Brandon Paulson was third at 114.5 behind 1996 NCAA champion Sheldon Thomas and 2004 Olympian Eric Guerrero. Jason McCloud (275) finished 5th, Brandon Howe (123) was 7th, and Ben Nelson (178) was 8th. 

In Greco, Brandon Paulson (114.5) was the champion and named outstanding wrestler after defeating Jason Kutz from PA 16-0.  Ben Nelson (178) was runner-up losing to double champion David McCubbins from Indiana. Minnesota had four wrestlers place third in Jason Davids (132), Jose’ Trevino (143), Jason DeVries (220), and Jason McCloud (275).  Kipp Williamson from Hayfield placed 8th at 123lbs.

In team results, although unofficial prior to 2006, Minnesota was 4th in Greco (40pts) behind Illinois (55pts) California (45pts), and New York with 43 points.  Freestyle the team finished 6th place with New York winning the team title.
