Fargo, ND – July 12, 2024: The USA Wrestling National Championships kicked off today with thrilling action in women's freestyle wrestling. Minnesota's athletes showcased their skills on the mat, setting the stage for a promising second day of competition.
In the 16U division, two Minnesota wrestlers have advanced to the semi-finals, demonstrating exceptional skill and determination. Bianca Eide, competing at 106 lbs., remains undefeated with a 4-0 record. Her quarter-final match was a nail-biting 8-7 victory over a tough opponent from California. Eide will next face the #7 seed from Pennsylvania in her quest for a spot in the finals.
Sarah Pulk, wrestling at 155 lbs., also secured her place in the semi-finals after winning three matches today. Pulk, the #2 seed, displayed dominance with two pins and has conceded only two points thus far. She is set to face the #3 seed from Tennessee in what likely will be a highly competitive match.
In the Junior division, Aspen Blasko continues to impress, maintaining a 4-0 record. Blasko, the #4 seed, started her day with an 11-0 victory thanks to a quick takedown and leg lace. This evening she had a great win over the #5 seed from Ohio. Blasko is now preparing to face Shayna Ward from California, eyeing for a spot on the big stage in the finals.
In the 16U division, Kayla Pastika and Cassie Gonzalez continue their journey in the wrestlebacks. Gonzalez, who won three matches today and will continue her run against Simon from Iowa. Pastika at 88lbs. has a smaller bracket, she had one match today and will compete against Grulla from Georgia tomorrow in the consolation semi-finals.
In the Junior division wrestlebacks, Audrey Rogotzke, Caley Graber, Esperanza Calvillo, and Grace Alagbo remain in contention. Calvillo and Alagbo need to win two consecutive matches tomorrow to secure a top 8 finish and achieve All-American status. Graber and Rogotzke each need one victory to advance.
The action resumes tomorrow at 9 am with semi-finals and consolation matches. The medal rounds, determining places 3rd through 8th, will begin around 12 pm, culminating in the championship finals at 6 pm.
