Boys Fargo Qualification BASICS (2024)

Updated 2/13/2024

All wrestlers MUST participate in at least one of the following tournaments, even if they are auto qualified:

  • MN/USA Wrestling State Tournament
  • Northern Plains or any USA Regional Freestyle or Greco qualifying tournament
  • UWW World Team Trials to qualify.

Participation in any of these tournaments makes the wrestler eligible for inclusion to the Fargo Camp and Wrestle-off (if needed) for the style they competed in.

July 10th, 11th Camp is MANDATORY

All wrestlers competing at Fargo are required to attend a MANDATORY team camp in order to participate.  This camp is ONLY for kids paid and wrestling at the National Championships in Fargo

Each state is allowed 4 wrestlers per weight class, not including athletes who are Auto-Qualified.

  • The MN/USA Wrestling 2024 State Champion will GUARANTEE one of the four allotted spots,  in the style and weight, they won.
    • if a wrestler decides to change weight classes, they will not be guaranteed a spot and will need to wrestle off.

How to Automatically Qualify for Nationals and NOT count against the 4/weight class:

  • Fargo All-American from previous year in style
  • Finish 1st-8th place at UWW this year
    • (placement must be in the same style)
  • Finish 1st-6th place at a USA Regional Event this year
    • (placement must be in the same age and style)
  • Previous year, age-level World Team member
    • (must be in the same style)

Auto Qualifier are allowed to compete at whatever weight you want in the particular style you qualified in.

All wrestlers, regardless of auto-qualification, must register before June 25th, so we know how many individuals are at each weight. All open spots, will be wrestled off, if needed on the June 29th.

Failure to make a wrestle off on June 29th will mean you will miss out on your opportunity to compete in Fargo.

***All final decisions are to be made by the age group director and state director***

2024- Boys Fargo Qualification Process

Updated on 2/13-2024

Here are the ways wrestlers become eligible for Team Minnesota in Fargo at the Cadet and Junior Freestyle/Greco National Championships.  These changes have been implemented not with the intent of reducing the number of kids competing, but rather with a desire to increase the number of kids competing throughout the season so that they are adequately prepared to be the best they can be at the end of the season.

This year USA Wrestling and the JOWC have decided to allow each state 4 wrestlers per weight class. This will not include any Auto Qualifiers.

As you will see below there is now a process that each wrestler must do to qualify to be at Fargo Camp.

In this list you will see different options for camps and tournaments that are available and some that are required to be attended by wrestlers.

All wrestlers MUST participate in at least one of the following tournaments even if you are an auto qualifier: (i) MN/USA Wrestling State Tournament; (ii) Northern Plains or any USA Regional Freestyle or Greco qualifying tournament; or (iii) UWW World Team Trials to qualify.  Participation in any of these tournaments makes the wrestler eligible for inclusion at Fargo for the style they competed in.

Here is a list of key dates:

March 23rd Freestyle/Greco Kickoff at the University of Minnesota Gopher’s wrestling room

May 4th - May 5th  Cadet and Junior Freestyle and Greco State Tournaments in Rochester, MN

May 10th - 12th Northern Plains Regional Freestyle and Greco Tournament in Rochester, MN

May 18th Cadet and Junior Freestyle and Greco Camp in Waconia at the Safari Island Community Center

May 31st - June 2nd U20 World Team Trials Location Geneva, OH

June 11th - 15th Cadet Duals Location Herriman, UT

June 18th - 22ND Junior Duals in Tulsa, OK

June 25th Wrestlers to register and declare Cadet and Junior Fargo Tournament Weight (needed to determine wrestle offs)

June 29th Cadet and Junior Camp Date and Fargo Wrestle off Date (only wrestlers that have done the qualifying process can attend – any wrestler who has not auto qualified is required to attend as we are only having wrestle-offs on this day) at STMA High School

July 10th and 11th  Fargo Camp for kids going to Fargo Only (this camp is MANDATORY to compete in Fargo ALL wrestlers must attend)

July 14th  - 20nd Fargo Cadet and Junior Nationals in Fargo, ND (Cadets & Juniors Wrestle the same days)

We have also come up with an option for wrestlers to guarantee one of the four allotted spots for this year in Minnesota.

MN/USA Wrestling 2024 State Champion in style and at that weight (if you decide to change your weight you will not be guaranteed a spot and will need to wrestle off)

In addition to the four allotted spots any individual meeting the criteria below will be considered an “Auto Qualifier” by USA Wrestling and will be provided with a spot which will not count towards the four allocated spots per state.  The Auto Qualifiers would be any of the following in style:

(i) Fargo All American from 2023 in style; (ii) Top 8 placement in 2024 at UWW in style; (iii) Top 6 placing at Northern Plains or any other USA regional tournament in 2024 in style and (iv) Previous year age-level World Team member in style

If you are an Auto Qualifier you will be allowed to compete at whatever weight you desire for the particular style you qualified for. All competing weights must be submitted to the appropriate age group director before June 25th, so we know how many individuals are at each weight. All open spots at that point will be wrestled off for if needed on the June 29th wrestle off date. Failure to make a wrestle off on June 29th will mean you will miss out on your opportunity to compete in Fargo.
